A city located in the northeast of Africa, almost in the center of Sudan. It is the capital of North Kordofan State. It is also called El Obeid. It has a population of 229,425 (1993). It has long been a trading center by camel caravans, but a railway and highway network opened in 1912 connected it to the capital, Khartoum, and other major cities in the country, and it remains an important commercial and communications center today. The surrounding area is a producer of cottonseed oil and gum arabic. It is also known as the place where the British and Egyptian forces were defeated by Muhammad Ahmad in 1883.
