Kaidai (English spelling) plateau

An oceanic plateau is a vast plateau-like landform on the ocean floor. It is a fairly large, flat-topped, elevated seafloor region with a difference in elevation between the top and bottom of the ocean of over 200m. However, as bathymetric surveys have progressed, it has become clear that the area is actually quite complex. In the late 1970s, oceanic plateaus came to be recognized as areas of huge volcanic rocks similar to plateau basalts. Representative examples of large oceanic plateaus are the Ontong Java Plateau in the southern Pacific Ocean, with an area of 1.86 million ^km2 and a volume of 26.9 to 61.3 million km3 ^; the Ontong Java System as a whole is estimated to have an area ^of 4.88 million km2 and a volume of 36.4 to 76 million ^km3 ^; the Kerguelen Plateau in the southern Indian Ocean, with an area of 1.54 million km2 and a volume of 9.9 to 15.4 million ^km3; and the Kerguelen System as a whole is estimated to have an area of 2.3 million ^km2 and a volume of 15.2 to 24.1 million ^km3 [Coffin & Eldholm: 1994]. The surfaces of these plateaus are covered with thick sediments, but the base is formed of basalt lava.

大洋底に存在する広大な台地状の地形を海台．頂上が平らなうえにかなりの広がりがあり，底部と頂部の高さの差が200m以上ある海底の高まりであるが，測深調査が進むにつれて，実際にはかなり複雑なことがわかってきた．1970年代後半になって海台は台地玄武岩と同様の巨大火山岩地域であることが認識されるようになった．代表的な巨大海台は，太平洋南部のオントンジャワ海台で面積は186万km²，体積は2 690万～6 130万km³で，オントンジャワ系全体では面積は488万km²，体積は3 640万～7 600万km³とされ，またインド洋南部のケルゲレン海台は面積は154万km²，体積は990万～1 540万km³，ケルゲレン系全体では面積が230万km²，体積は1 520万～2 410万km³と見積もられている［Coffin & Eldholm : 1994］．これらの海台の表面は厚い堆積物で覆われているが，基盤が玄武岩熔岩で形成されている．
