Born: July 4, 1834, Glasgow [Died] November 24, 1904, Mulhouse, France. One of the first professional industrial designers in Britain. He created innovative tableware using glass and metal. In 1873, he organized the Japanese section at the Great Exhibition in London, helping to promote trade between the two countries. In 1876, he visited Japan as a representative of the British government. He brought back many works of Oriental art to Britain, encouraging the Japanese taste that was popular in Europe at the time. His books include The Art of Decorative Design (1862) and Japan, Its Architecture, Art and Art Manufactures (1882).
