…A naval port and resort town on the southeast coast of Hampshire, southern England, United Kingdom. Formerly known simply as Port, its local name means "port harbour entrance". Population 189,000 (1993). Located in the southwest of Portsea Island, between Portsmouth Bay and Langston Bay, an inlet of the English Channel, it forms a peninsula connected to the mainland by a bridge. There is also a bridge connecting it to the port city of Gosport on the opposite shore of Portsmouth Bay, and it faces the Isle of Wight across the Spithead Channel. …
