Creosote - Creosote (English spelling)

It is a mixture of about 10 kinds of phenols, including guaiacol and cresol, which are obtained by distilling wood tar obtained mainly from beech plants, as well as pear, maple, and pine trees, and refining the fraction heavier than water. It is a colorless or slightly yellow, clear liquid with a peculiar odor and a burning taste. It is difficult to dissolve in water, and mixes well with ethanol (ethyl alcohol), ether, and glycerin. It has bactericidal and preservative properties, and is taken orally as creosote pills for abnormal intestinal fermentation, various types of diarrhea, and food poisoning. It is also used to treat chronic bronchitis by utilizing its expectorant and antitussive properties. It also has a local anesthetic effect, so it is used in dentistry by soaking a small cotton ball in it and inserting it into a cavity to sterilize, disinfect, and relieve pain. Its bactericidal properties are weaker than phenol, and it is also less toxic and irritating.

おもにブナ属植物のほか、ナシ、モミジ、マツなどから得た木タールを蒸留して水より重い留分を精製したもので、グアヤコール、クレゾールなど約10種のフェノール類の混合物である。無色または微黄色の澄明な液で特異なにおいがあり、舌を焼くような味を有する。水に溶けにくく、エタノール（エチルアルコール）、エーテル、グリセリンとよく混和する。殺菌・防腐作用を有し、腸内異常発酵、各種下痢、食中毒にクレオソート丸として内服する。また、去痰(きょたん)・鎮咳(ちんがい)作用を利用して慢性気管支炎の治療に用いられる。そのほか局所麻酔作用もあるので、歯科で小綿球に浸して虫歯に挿入し、殺菌消毒と痛みをとるために用いる。殺菌作用はフェノールより弱く、毒性、刺激性も弱い。
