Western-style painter. Born in Kagoshima City. After graduating from junior high school, he moved to Tokyo and studied under Arishima Ikuma and attended the Kawabata Art School. In 1923 (Taisho 12), he traveled to France to study under Foujita Tsuguharu, and the following year exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. In Paris, he held a trio exhibition with Campigli and Giacometti, and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, among others. In 1934 (Showa 9), he returned to Japan, and the following year became a member of the Independent Art Association. After World War II, he lived in Kumamoto for 15 years, and headed the Ebihara Art Institute. In 1951 (Showa 26), his work "Martyrs" was purchased by the Ministry of Education. At the Japan International Art Exhibition, his work "Burning" won the National Museum of Modern Art Award in 1982, and his work "Butterfly" won the Grand Prize in 1984. The following year, he received the first Mainichi Art Award, and in 1988, he received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for "Rainy Day" and other works. He was a representative artist of intellectual figurative painting, and passed away in Paris on September 19, 1970. 洋画家。鹿児島市に生まれる。中学校卒業後上京し、有島生馬(いくま)に師事、川端画学校に通う。1923年(大正12)渡仏して藤田嗣治(つぐじ)の薫陶を受け、翌年サロン・ドートンヌに出品。パリでカンピーリ、ジャコメッティと三人展を開いたり、サロン・デ・ザンデパンダンなどに出品。34年(昭和9)帰国、翌年独立美術協会の会員となる。第二次世界大戦後15年間熊本に住み、海老原美術研究所を主宰する。51年(昭和26)『殉教者』が文部省買い上げ。日本国際美術展において、57年『燃える』が国立近代美術館賞、59年『蝶(ちょう)』が最優秀賞を受け、翌年第1回毎日芸術賞、また63年の『雨の日』ほかにより芸術選奨文部大臣賞を受賞。知性的具象絵画の代表作家だったが、昭和45年9月19日パリで没した。 [小倉忠夫] 『『現代日本の美術9 海老原喜之助他』(1976・集英社)』 出典 小学館 日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)について 情報 | 凡例 |
