...It is believed to have been written by Bhatsyayana (Mallanaga) and was written around the 4th or 5th century, but the date of its creation is not certain. Since ancient times in India, dharma (law), artha (practical benefits), and kama (sexual love) have been considered the three main aims of life (tri-varga), and Bhatsyayana wrote this book with a particular emphasis on the importance of studying kama. At the end of the book, he states, "This book was written to be useful to the lives of people through the highest level of asceticism and mental concentration, and was not compiled for the purpose of lust." ...
