…The person who most sincerely tried to realize this purpose was the British publisher Sir Stanley Unwin (1884-1968). When the British Publishers Association (a small private association, but the most authoritative organization in the book profession) sent a delegation of publishers and book dealers to Germany and the Netherlands in 1926 to inspect the publishing situation after World War I, Unwin was the head of the delegation and wrote an excellent report, which resulted in the formation of a cooperative committee in England that closely linked publishers and book dealers. Unwin also established the National Book Conference in London in 1924, which developed into the present National Book League, and became a powerful organization connecting publishers, book dealers, and readers. …
