Coinage made from copper or bronze began to be used in China from the end of the Zhou dynasty, and by the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, sword coins, cloth coins, and ant nose coins had been minted. The First Emperor of Qin unified the currency system, and as part of this, he minted the round, square-hole half-liang coin. The copper coin format was established during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han dynasty, and the Wushu coins minted at this time were considered high quality coins and were used as the standard for specie coins until the Sui dynasty. During the Northern Song dynasty, copper was produced in large quantities, and many were minted, and large quantities were exported to Japan. The Kaiyuan Tongbao coin was the model for the Wado Kaichin coin and other coins. Source: Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition About Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition |
