Japanese: アレルヤ

A transliteration of the Hebrew word meaning "Praise God." It is also called Hallelujah. In the Old Testament, this word is used in several places at the beginning and end of the Psalms, and in the New Testament, in the Book of Revelation (19:1-6). The "Alleluia Recitation," one of the liturgical texts of the Catholic Church, uses a portion of a Psalm with a cheer of Alleluia (Hallelujah) before and after it. Famous compositions include the finale of the second part of Handel's oratorio "Messiah" and the finale of Mozart's motet "Exultate Jubilate."

ヘブライ語で〈神をたたえよ〉の意味の言葉の音訳。ハレルヤHallelujahともいう。旧約聖書では詩編において文頭や文末に数ヵ所，新約聖書では黙示録（19の１〜６）にこの語が用いられている。カトリック教会のミサ典礼文の一つ〈アレルヤ誦(しょう)〉は前後にアレルヤ（ハレルヤ）の歓声をもつ詩編の一部を歌詞とする。作曲されたものでは，ヘンデルのオラトリオ《メサイア》第２部終曲，モーツァルトのモテット《エクスルターテ・ユビラーテ》終曲が有名。
