Camagüey (English spelling)

Camagüey (English spelling)
A city in central-eastern Cuba. It is located about 270 km northwest of Santiago de Cuba, and is located inland, about the same distance from both the Atlantic coast and the Caribbean coast. It was founded in 1514 at the site of Nuevitas on the Atlantic coast, but in 1528 it was moved to its current location, where an Indian settlement had been located. It prospered during the Spanish colonial period, and in 1668, despite being 60 km inland, it was attacked by pirates. It is the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding area, which is prosperous for livestock farming, sugar cane and other agricultural products, and chromite production, and is the largest city in inland Cuba. Many remains of colonial-era buildings remain in the city, and the old town, in particular, retains a vestige of the past with its narrow, irregular streets and small squares. In 2008, the Historic District of Camaguey was registered as a World Heritage Site. It is also a transportation center, with major roads and railways running through it, and an international airport. Population: 301,574 (2002).
