Hot dog - Hot dog (English spelling)

It can refer to a frankfurter sausage or a sandwich with the sausage in a bread roll. In Japan, it refers to a long, thin bread roll with deep slits, butter or mustard paste, Vienna sausage and pickled cabbage inside, and heated in a hot oven. When sandwiches stuffed with frankfurter sausage were first sold at an American baseball stadium in 1900, a cartoonist named TA Dorgan named it a hot dog because it resembled a long-bodied dachshund. In German, a sandwich is called belegtes Brötchen, and the word belegen also means "male on female," so the word hot is probably used as a sexual expression, with the bread being feminine and the meat being masculine. Condiments such as mustard and warm sausages also fit the image of hot.

フランクフルトソーセージをさす場合と、このソーセージをロールパンに挟んだサンドイッチをさす場合がある。日本では、細長いロールパンに深い切れ目を入れてバターや練りがらしを塗り、ウインナーソーセージ、酢漬けキャベツを挟んで天火で温めたものをいう。1900年、アメリカの野球場でフランクフルトソーセージを詰めたサンドイッチが初めて売られたとき、ドーガンT. A. Dorganという漫画家が、胴の長いダックスフント犬に似ているというのでホットドッグと命名したといわれる。ドイツ語ではサンドイッチをベレークテス・ブレーチヒェンbelegtes Brötchenといい、ベレーゲンbelegenという語には「雌に雄をかける」という意味もあるので、パンはフェミニン、肉はマスキュリンという性的表現として、ホットという語が使われていると思われる。からしなどの調味料や温かいソーセージも、ホットというイメージにふさわしい。
