The former name of a town (Kawasoe-machi) in Saga County, at the southeastern edge of Saga Prefecture. The area now occupies the southern edge of Saga City. The former Kawasoe-machi was renamed Kawasoe-machi in 1955 (Showa 30) when Minamikawasoe-machi and the two villages of Nakagawasoe and Odakuma merged. In 1956, Nishikawasoe-mura was incorporated. In 2007 (Heisei 19), it was incorporated into Saga City along with the towns of Kubota and Higashiyoka. There is a bus service from JR Saga Station. It is a mountainless reclaimed land that stretches to the west of the Fukuoka Prefecture border at the mouth of the Chikugo River, in the inner part of Ariake Bay. The name Kawasoe comes from the medieval Kawasoe Sho. The northernmost area around Nanri and Yonotsu is said to be the coastline from the end of the Kamakura period, with reclaimed land such as Komori and Karamina opening up like scales. In the early Edo period, Otakuma Island and Ono Island, which were reclaimed land formed on the sandbar at the mouth of the Chikugo River, became disputed territory between the Hizen Saga Domain and the Chikugo Yanagawa Domain. At the tip of the island, Heiwa Kara and Kokuzo reclaimed land, Saga Airport opened in 1998 (Heisei 10). The offshore area is a representative seaweed farming area in the Ariake Sea. In addition to seaweed, rice, and wheat cultivation, the area is also aiming to diversify its agriculture into greenhouse horticulture and dairy farming. There is a prefectural agricultural college and a prefectural agricultural experiment station. Hayatsue is an area associated with the Saga Domain's navy, where the Mietsu Naval Dock was established. Kaido Shrine is located in Inui-do, the center of the village. The unique houses with square roofs that have a funnel-shaped depression in the middle, called "Jogodani," have attracted attention, and the Yamaguchi family residence in Otakuma is a nationally designated important cultural property.
