…It is a transliteration of Sanskrit prajñā and Pāli paññā, and is translated into Chinese as 'wisdom'. It means 'wisdom', but in Buddhism it does not mean simple wisdom, but rather 'true wisdom for attaining enlightenment' or 'insight that sees through all things'. Primitive Buddhism and the Pāli Theravada Buddhism that succeeded it established the 'three studies' of precepts, concentration and wisdom. They teach that by being cautious in one's actions (precepts) and controlling one's own mind (concentration), correct insight (wisdom) is generated and peace (liberation = nirvana) is attained. …
