A city in the northern part of Moravia in the Czech Republic. Population 61,771 (2001). German name Troppau. An industrial city on the banks of the Opava River, a tributary of the Odra River, its main industries are mining equipment manufacturing, food and textile manufacturing. Historically, it belonged to Silesia (German name Silesien) and originated in the 13th century. After the War of the Austrian Succession in 1742, it became the capital of what remained of Silesia as Austrian territory. In 1820, the victorious nations of the Napoleonic Wars held a conference in this city, and Russia, Prussia and Austria decided to intervene in the liberal movement in the Iberian Peninsula and Naples (Tropau Protocol). Many historical buildings are preserved in the old town, and there is also the Silesian Museum.
