Stone crown - Sekka

Japanese:
Stone crown - Sekka

A polished stone tool in the shape of a crown. Because of its shape, it was given this name by researchers in the Meiji period and became common. This type of stone tool was illustrated under the name "Jindai stone" in "Unkonshi" Volume 3 by Kiuchi Sekitei, published in 1801 (Kyowa 1), and was also noted by Edo period enthusiasts.

In 1922 (Taisho 11), when Kashiwa Oyama and others excavated the Hiraki shell mound (late Jomon period) in Homi, Fukue Town, Aichi Prefecture (Tahara City), a stone crown was excavated from the top of the head, and it was thought to be a grave crown, but there are no other similar examples, so it seems more appropriate to call it a crown-shaped stone product. They have been discovered in ruins from the late and final Jomon culture in the Chubu region and east, and the ones from the late to early final period have different shapes from those from the final period. These are not practical items, but perhaps religious ceremonial items. In addition, many crude crown-shaped stone products made of porous andesite that are thought to have been used as stone plates have been excavated from ruins from the early Jomon period in the Uchiura Bay coastal area of Hokkaido, but these are practical items that form a set with a grinding stone, and are stone products with a completely different purpose from the former, although they have similar shapes. In recent years, it has also been discovered at a late Jomon cultural site in Nishinoomote City, Tanegashima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture.
