Territorialismus (religionis)

In medieval Europe, the idea that the lord of a territory had the right to decide the religion of the inhabitants of that territory, and therefore all those within that territory should follow the lord's religion. This idea was already seen when the Germanic peoples began to convert to Christianity, but it was particularly debated during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century in relation to the question of whether to be Catholic or Protestant, and was legally confirmed as the right of the Protestant Reformation in the Peace of Augsburg in 1555 under the slogan cuius regio, eius religio (to him (the lord) to whom the territory belongs, the religion belongs). This idea remained in part until the 19th century.
