Born: November 16, 1837, Petersburg Died: June 26, 1905. Swiss theologian from Basel. Close friend of Nietzsche. After working as a private lecturer at the University of Jena, he became professor of New Testament and ancient church history at the University of Basel (1870-1897). He viewed Christianity from an eschatological perspective, and believed that the distinctive feature of Christianity was its negativity of the world. He lectured on church history, stating that the church is a religious group unrelated to Christianity and that church history is a process of corruption from the original history of the Bible. K. Barth saw his criticism as a precursor to dialectical theology. His major works include Über die Christlichkeit unserer heutigen Theologie (73), Studien zur Geschichte der alten Kirche (75), and Christentum und Kultur (1919). Overbeck |
