Died: June 26, 1905. Swiss theologian from Basel. Close friend of Nietzsche. After working as a private lecturer at the University of Jena, he became professor of New Testament and ancient church history at the University of Basel (1870-1897). He viewed Christianity from an eschatological perspective, and believed that the distinctive feature of Christianity was its negativity of the world. He lectured on church history, stating that the church is a religious group unrelated to Christianity and that church history is a process of corruption from the original history of the Bible. K. Barth saw his criticism as a precursor to dialectical theology. His major works include Über die Christlichkeit unserer heutigen Theologie (73), Studien zur Geschichte der alten Kirche (75), and Christentum und Kultur (1919).

Overbeck
Overbeck, Johann Friedrich

Born: July 3, 1789 in Lübeck
Died November 12, 1869. German painter from Rome. He mainly worked in Italy. He studied at the Academy in Vienna in 1806 and was influenced by F. Pforr. In 1809, he founded the Lucian League (the so-called Nazarene School) in Vienna with Pforr, Wintergast, and Hottinger. The following year, he moved to Rome with Pforr and worked to promote new religious painting at the abandoned monastery of Sant'Isidoro on the Pincio Hill. His representative work, the fresco series "Life of St. Joseph" at Casa Bartholdi (1816-17, State Gallery, Berlin), shows significant influences from Perugino and Raphael.

ドイツの画家。おもにイタリアで制作。 1806年ウィーンのアカデミーに学び，F.プフォルに影響を受ける。 09年ウィーンでプフォル，ウィンターガスト，ホッティンガーらとともにルカス同盟 (いわゆるナザレ派 ) を創設。翌年プフォルとともにローマに移住，ピンチオ丘の廃寺聖イシドロ修道院で新しい宗教画の振興に努める。代表作であるカーサ・バルトルディのフレスコ連作『聖ヨゼフ画伝』 (1816～17，ベルリン国立美術館) にはペルジーノおよびラファエロの影響が著しい。
