1815‐94 Spanish painter. Born in Rome, died in Madrid. His father, José de Madrazo y Agudo (1781-1859), from Santander, was also a painter, raised in the neoclassical tradition of Mengs. After working in David's studio in Paris, he studied in Rome, where he became friends with Canova and Overbeck. After returning to Spain, he painted historical paintings and portraits in the neoclassical style. Federico studied under his father and stayed in Paris for a long time, where he gained fame, including painting a portrait of the painter Ingres.
