A city in eastern Yamagata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1959. The central town, located on the Obanazawa Basin, was discovered in the mid-15th century when the Nobezawa Silver Mine was discovered, and flourished as a collection and shipping point during the Kan'ei era at its peak. The Edo shogunate's magistrate's office was also located here, and it developed as a post town along the Ushu Kaido road. There is a bus service from Oishida Station on the Ou Main Line, and it is located along National Route 13. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, and watermelons and cherries are also produced in abundance. It is famous for being one of the snowiest areas in Japan for a flat area. It is home to Ginzan Onsen (sulfurous spring, 63°C) and Mt. Funagata. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 372.53 km2 . 18,955 people (2010). 山形県東部の市。1959年市制。尾花沢盆地上の中心市街は15世紀中頃,延沢銀山が発見され,最盛期の寛永年間にはその集出荷地として栄えた。また幕府の代官所がおかれ,羽州街道に沿う宿場町としても発達した。奥羽本線大石田駅からバスが通じ,国道13号線に沿う。農林業を主とし,スイカ,サクランボの産も多い。平坦地としては日本有数の深雪地帯で有名。銀山温泉(硫黄泉,63℃),船形山がある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。372.53km2。1万8955人(2010)。
