1239‐1311 King of the Thai kingdom of Lannatai. Also called Mengrai. Born as a prince in Chiang Saen, a town on the Mekong River in the far north of Thailand. Succeeding his father at the age of 22, he founded the town of Chiang Rai in 1262 and unified the small kingdoms in the basins and small plains of northern Thailand, such as Chiang Khong and Phan. In 87, he formed an alliance with King Ngam Muang of the Phayao kingdom, also of the Thai people, and King Ramkhamhaeng of the Sukhothai dynasty, and provoked the Hmong kingdom of Haripunjaya (present-day Lamphun) in northern Thailand, and in 91-92 conquered it.
