King of the Thai kingdom of Lannatai. Also called Mengrai. Born as a prince in Chiang Saen, a town on the Mekong River in the far north of Thailand. Succeeding his father at the age of 22, he founded the town of Chiang Rai in 1262 and unified the small kingdoms in the basins and small plains of northern Thailand, such as Chiang Khong and Phan. In 87, he formed an alliance with King Ngam Muang of the Phayao kingdom, also of the Thai people, and King Ramkhamhaeng of the Sukhothai dynasty, and provoked the Hmong kingdom of Haripunjaya (present-day Lamphun) in northern Thailand, and in 91-92 conquered it.

タイのラーンナータイ国の王。メンライMengraiともいう。タイ最北部のメコン河岸の町チエンセーンの王子として生まれた。22歳で父王の後を継ぎ，1262年にチエンライの町を建設し，チエンコーン，ファーンなど北部タイの盆地や小さい平野にある小国を統合していった。87年に同じタイ族のパヤオ国のガムムアン王，スコータイ朝のラーマカムヘン王らと同盟を結び，北部タイのモン族の国ハリプンジャヤ(現在のラムプーン)を挑発し，91年から翌年にこれを攻略した。
