A fabric made with tussah silk threads for the warp and knotty tussah silk threads for the weft, resulting in irregular knots on the woven surface. The name shantung comes from the Chinese word Shandong, and Shandong Province in China is a producer of tussah silk. It is imported in large quantities to Japan and woven in the Fukui and Gifu regions. However, nowadays, instead of tussah silk, it is possible to use raw silk for the warp and dupion silk for the weft, and even cotton and synthetic fabrics have appeared. It is generally dyed plain and printed to give it a rustic texture. It is used for women's clothing, blouses, shirts, etc. [Kadoyama Yukihiro] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
