Esutori - Esutori

Japanese: 恵須取 - えすとる
Esutori - Esutori

A city on the west coast of South Sakhalin, facing the Mamiya Strait. In the Russian Federation, it belongs to Sakhalin Oblast and is called Uglegorsk Углегорск. In addition to the port, there are forestry companies, a paper mill, and the Sakhalin Furniture factory. The population is 18,500. Before World War II, it was divided into a coastal city with a port and fishing port, and a factory town about 2 kilometers inland east up the Esutori River. It was a small fishing village, but it developed after the construction of a pulp factory by Karafuto Kogyosha, which was founded in 1925 (Taisho 14), and Oji Paper and Taihei Coal Mine were located there, and South Sakhalin's first coal mine (annual production of about 400,000 tons in the early Showa period) was in operation nearby. The population at the end of 1942 was 39,026.
