1432‐88 Born in Venice, Italy, he was an explorer of the West African coast. In 1455, with the support of Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal, he attempted to sail south along the Atlantic coast of Africa, first passing Madeira and the Canary Islands, and then reaching the Senegal and Gambia Rivers. On his second voyage the following year, he discovered the Cape Verde Islands, explored two islands, and confirmed that they were uninhabited. He also explored the interior of the Gambia River. On his return journey, he sailed further south and explored the coast of present-day Guinea-Bissau. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
