A city in the southeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1898. The three mountains of Ruri, Mani, and Taiho are close to the coast, and the city stretches along the coast in a long, narrow strip. During the Edo period, it prospered through westward shipping, and foreign trade was also active. Traditionally, it has been a distribution city. With the completion of the Onomichi Industrial Park and the advancement of companies, the city is moving away from its traditional focus on shipbuilding. It is a key transportation hub in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, with the Sanyo Main Line, Shinkansen, and Sanyo Expressway passing through the city, and the Nishi-Seto Expressway and Chugoku Odan Expressway under construction. It is connected to Mukaishima, separated by the Onomichi Strait, by the Onomichi Ohashi Bridge (total length 386.45m). The Onomichi-Imabari route of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge (nicknamed the Shimanami Kaido) opened in May 1999. There are many old temples, such as Senkoji, Jodo-ji, and Saigoku-ji, and Senkoji Park, which is connected by a ropeway, has a beautiful view of the Seto Inland Sea. Ikuchijima is home to Kosan-ji Temple, and it and part of Innoshima belong to the Setonaikai National Park. In March 2005, Mitsugi-cho and Mukojima-cho of Mitsugi-gun were incorporated, and in January 2006, Innoshima City and Setoda-cho of Toyota-gun were incorporated. 285.09 km2 . Population: 145,202 (2010). →Related topics Ikuchijima | Mukojima (Hiroshima) Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
