Leader of the Ukrainian peasant movement. Anarchist. Born the son of a peasant family in the village of Hulyai Pole, Yekaterinoslav County (now Zaporozhian Oblast). From the time of the 1905 Revolution, he participated in attacks on police, merchants, and wealthy people as a member of anarchist groups, and was arrested in 1908. After the February Revolution in 1917, he was released and returned to his hometown, where he became a leader of the peasant movement. In 1918, under German occupation, Makhno organized a peasant partisan unit and gradually became known as a military leader.

ウクライナの農民運動の指導者。アナーキスト。エカチェリノスラフ県グリャイ･ポーレ村(現，ザポロージエ州)に農民の子として生まれた。1905年革命のころからアナーキスト･グループの一員として警察や商人，富豪への襲撃に加わり，08年逮捕された。17年の二月革命後釈放されて故郷に帰り，農民運動の指導者となった。18年ドイツ軍占領下でマフノは農民パルチザン部隊を組織し，しだいに軍事指導者として知られるようになった。
