…During World War II, he joined the resistance organization under German occupation. In 1945, he joined the Pasteur Institute, where he again worked under André Michael Lwoff (1902-94) on the production of β-galactosidase in E. coli. In 1951, he found that the enzyme was induced in the presence of an inducer, independent of metabolism. In 1959, together with Arthur Beck Pardee (1921- ) and François Jacob (1920- ), he performed a genetic analysis of the induction of this enzyme in E. coli (the pajama experiment), and based on these results, in 1961, together with Jacob, he proposed the operon theory. …
