…He was born in Berlin to a Jewish businessman and studied philosophy at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg. He later gained attention as a journalist under the pen name Heinz Raabe, writing critical essays and theater reviews in Weimar Germany. With the rise of the Nazis, he fled to France and then to the United States, and in 1945 became a professor of philosophy and German literature at the University of Southern California. After World War II, he contributed to West German newspapers and was active as a critic. …
