A district in the eastern part of Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward. Before Tokugawa Ieyasu entered the city, this area was part of Tokyo Bay called Hibiya Irie, but it was filled in after 1593 (Bunroku 2). It was named after the fact that it is located between the inner and outer moats and is within the Edo Castle. In addition to the hatamoto Hayashi Daigaku no Kami, the area was home to 24 feudal lords and was called Daimyo Koji. In 1872 (Meiji 5), it was burned down in a fire that spread to Ginza, and later became an army barracks and training ground. In 1890, to raise funds for the relocation of the barracks and other facilities, the area was sold to Mitsubishi (Iwasaki Yanosuke) for 1.5 million yen, and was called Mitsubishigahara. From 1894 onwards, a street of red brick buildings was constructed modelled on Lombard Street in London, and was called One Block London (one block is approximately 100 metres long). After Tokyo Station was completed in 1914 (Taisho 3), the area rapidly developed as a street of buildings in the city centre where administrative functions were concentrated. The Meiji Life Insurance Company's Meiji Seimeikan in Marunouchi 2-chome was designated an Important Cultural Property by the national government (1997). The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which was located in Marunouchi 3-chome, moved to Shinjuku New City Centre in 1991 (Heisei 3), and the former site became the Tokyo International Forum (opened in 1997), a conference and exhibition facility. [Kiyoshi Sawada] [Reference item] |This JR passenger station serves as the main entrance to the capital, Tokyo. Marunouchi Honya (pictured) was designed by architect Tatsuno Kingo and completed in 1914 (Taisho 3). It was damaged in war in 1945 (Showa 20), but was rebuilt in 1947, reducing the three-storey building to two stories while preserving the original appearance. It was restored to its original appearance when it opened in 2012 (Heisei 24). The brick building is approximately 335m long, with the north and south domes about 35m high. A seismic isolation structure was used for the restoration work.
