Department of Physical Medicine

Japanese: 理学診療科 - りがくしんりょうか

A medical department that uses the physical effects of light, heat, water, ultrasound, and ultrashort waves to diagnose and treat. It is a medical department that is closely related to rehabilitation medicine, and physiotherapy, including physical therapy and exercise therapy, is the main treatment. Physiotherapy is extremely effective in improving various movement disorders, and if physiotherapy is carried out within the broader concept of rehabilitation medicine, it can improve not only functional disorders but also disability. This is because modern physiotherapy has come to make use of not only physical therapy but also various therapeutic exercises aimed at strengthening muscles, improving joint range of motion, and improving movement, and at the same time, specialized treatments such as prosthetics, braces, and wheelchairs are carried out as a team to try to overcome disabilities such as limb loss and trunk deformity.

光線，温熱，水，超音波，超短波などの物理的作用を利用して診断や治療を行う診療部門。リハビリテーション医療と非常に関係が深い診療科目で，物理療法や運動療法を含む理学療法が治療の主体をなす。種々の運動障害の改善には理学療法はきわめて有効であり，より広いリハビリテーション医療の概念で理学療法を実施するならば機能障害の改善のみならず，能力障害の改善をも果たすことができる。それは，現在の理学療法が単に物理療法のみならず種々の筋力強化や関節可動域改善，運動の改善を目的とした治療体操を多く用いるようになったためであり，同時に，四肢の欠損や体幹の変形に対して義肢･装具･車椅子など補装具をくふうして障害を克服する試みなどの専門的治療をチームワークで実行することになったためである。
