[Founding of the medieval Kingdom of Serbia]
The South Slavic Serbs, who migrated south and settled in the western Balkans in the early 7th century, were initially divided into tribes led by chieftains (župans), and continued to fight and quarrel. Their territories included Raška (present-day southwestern Serbia), Zeta (Montenegro), and Hum (Herzegovina). From the 8th to the 12th centuries, the southern Serbian region came under the strong influence of the neighboring Bulgarian Kingdom and the Byzantine Empire, and came under their rule. …
