Pearl oyster - Pearl oyster

Japanese: シンジュガイ(真珠貝) - シンジュガイ

They are a type of shellfish belonging to the pearl-producing family, the Akoya oyster (illustration) being a prime example, but the following species are also included. The white-lipped oyster, Pinctada maxima (illustration), has a large shell, about 20cm in height and length, although some individuals can reach 30cm. It is not very swollen, reaching about 4cm. The surface is yellowish-white, and when young, it has scale-like protrusions resembling cypress bark, but as it ages, these are almost completely lost and the shell thickens. The inside has a silvery-white pearly luster, but the edges are yellow, so this species is known by the trade names yellow lip or gold lip.

真珠を採取するウグイスガイ科に属する貝類でアコヤガイ（イラスト）はその代表であるが，下記の種も含まれる。　シロチョウガイ(白蝶貝)Pinctada maxima（イラスト）は殻は大型になり，高さ，長さとも20cmくらいであるが，30cmに達する個体もある。膨らみは弱く4cmくらいになる。表面は黄白色で，幼時は檜皮葺（ひわだぶき）状の鱗片状突起があるが，老成するとほとんど失われ，殻は厚くなる。内面は銀白色の真珠光沢があるが，縁部は黄色なので，この種の商品名をyellow lip，またはgold lipという。
