Chuichi Ariyoshi

He was a Home Ministry bureaucrat and colonial administrative bureaucrat during the Meiji and Taisho periods. He was the eldest son of Ariyoshi Sanshichi, a samurai of the Miyazu Domain (Kyoto Prefecture). His younger brother was the diplomat Ariyoshi Akira. After graduating from the Faculty of Law of Tokyo Imperial University in 1896, he joined the Home Ministry, and served as counselor for Shimane Prefecture and Hyogo Prefecture, counselor for the Home Ministry, head of the Taiwan Section of the Minister's Secretariat, governor of Chiba Prefecture, director of the General Affairs Department of the Korean Government-General, and director of the General Affairs Department of the Government-General of Korea. He served as governor of Miyazaki Prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Hyogo Prefecture, and in 1922 he became the Political Affairs Department of the Government-General of Korea, later mayor of Yokohama, and an imperially appointed member of the House of Peers. He also served as chairman of the Yokohama Chamber of Commerce and Industry, vice chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and director of the Japanese Red Cross, and was known for his honest personality. <References> "A Hundred Years of the Parliamentary System" compiled by the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors

明治大正期の内務官僚,植民地行政官僚。宮津藩(京都府)藩士有吉三七の長男。弟は外交官有吉明。明治29(1896)年に東京帝大法科大を卒業して内務省に入り,島根県,兵庫県の参事官,内務省参事官から大臣官房台湾課長を経て,千葉県知事,韓国統監府総務長官,朝鮮総督府総務部長官を歴任。宮崎県,神奈川県,兵庫県の各県知事を経て,大正11(1922)年に朝鮮総督府政務総監,のちに横浜市長,また貴族院勅選議員となる。横浜商工会議所会頭,日本商工会議所副会頭,日赤理事も務め,実直な人柄で知られた。<参考文献>衆議院・参議院編『議会制度百年史』
