Ikema Island

An island located 1.3 km north of Nishihenna Misaki, at the northern tip of Miyako Island, Okinawa Prefecture. It is one of the Miyako Islands and belongs to Miyakojima City. In the local dialect, it is called Ikima. It has an area of ​​2.83 square kilometers. It is a low, flat island covered with Ryukyu limestone, with a highest point of 28 meters. There are good fishing grounds around the island, such as the reefs of Yaebishi. It was once a base for deep-sea fishing in the south. It is connected to Miyako Island by the Ikema Bridge. Population 731 (2009).

沖縄県宮古(みやこ)島の北端、西平安名岬(にしへんなみさき)の北1.3キロメートルにある島。宮古列島の一つで、宮古島市に属する。方言ではイキマという。面積2.83平方キロメートル。琉球(りゅうきゅう)石灰岩に覆われ、最高点28メートルの低平な島である。島の周辺には、八重干瀬(やえびし)などの台礁の好漁場がある。かつては南方遠洋漁業の基地になっていた。池間大橋で宮古島と結ばれている。人口731(2009)。
