A 16th-century admiral in the Ottoman Navy. His real name was Hizur Reis, and his nickname Barbaros means "Red Beard." He was born on the island of Midirili in the Aegean Sea, and his father Yaqub was a sipah (feudal knight) of the Ottoman Empire. In his youth, he and his brothers aspired to become korsans (maritime adventurers and pirates), and their base was the island of Djerba in the Gulf of Gabes in eastern Tunisia. He gained power by conquering cities along the coasts of Tunisia and Algeria, but he surrendered to Sultan Suleiman I when he was invited to do so.

16世紀のオスマン帝国海軍の提督。バルバロスはあだ名で〈赤髯〉を意味し，本名はフズル･レイスという。エーゲ海中のミディルリ島に生まれ，父ヤクーブはオスマン帝国のシパーヒー(封建騎士)であった。若年のころ，兄弟とともにコルサン(海洋冒険者，海賊)を志し，根拠地はチュニジアの東部にあるガベス湾内のジェルバ島であった。チュニジア，アルジェリア沿岸の諸城市を攻略して勢威盛んであったが，スルタン，スレイマン1世の招聘を受けて帰順した。
