1483?-1546 A 16th-century admiral in the Ottoman Navy. His real name was Hizur Reis, and his nickname Barbaros means "Red Beard." He was born on the island of Midirili in the Aegean Sea, and his father Yaqub was a sipah (feudal knight) of the Ottoman Empire. In his youth, he and his brothers aspired to become korsans (maritime adventurers and pirates), and their base was the island of Djerba in the Gulf of Gabes in eastern Tunisia. He gained power by conquering cities along the coasts of Tunisia and Algeria, but he surrendered to Sultan Suleiman I when he was invited to do so.
