Onoe Kikujiro

Japanese: 尾上菊次郎 - おのえきくじろう

Kabuki actor. During the Bunka and Bunsei era, Ichikawa Takisaburo became the apprentice of Onoe Kikugoro III and adopted the name Kikujiro. The stage name has been Otowaya for four generations. (1) 2nd generation (1814-1875, Bunka 11-Meiji 8) Haiku name Baika. Born in Osaka. After studying under Kataoka Nizaemon 7th and Nakamura Tomijuro 2nd, he went to Edo in 1835 (Tenpo 6) and became a disciple of Kikugoro 3rd, and took the name Onoe Kikujiro 2nd from Nakamura Sanko. He competed with Bando Shiuka 1st and Kikugoro 4th for popularity as a young female actor. He was a wife to the master Ichikawa Kodanji 4th and was particularly good at playing female roles in domestic dramas.

歌舞伎俳優。文化･文政期，市川滝三郎が3世尾上菊五郎に入門して菊次郎を称したのを初世とし4代にわたる。屋号は代々音羽屋。(1)2世(1814‐75∥文化11‐明治8)　俳名梅花。大坂生れ。7世片岡仁左衛門，2世中村富十郎などの門下を経て1835年(天保6)江戸へ下り，3世菊五郎の弟子となり，中村三光から2世尾上菊次郎となった。初世坂東志うか，4世菊五郎とともに若手女方の人気を争った。名人4世市川小団次の女房役者として特に世話物の女役をよくした。
