Also written as sieve tube. A tubular cell or tissue made of such cells that is found in the phloem (bast) of a plant body and is its main component. Sieve tube cells are connected vertically, and the septum that connects them is called the sieve plate and is pierced by numerous small holes called sieve holes. Thus, sieve tubes have a long tubular structure and function as a passageway. While xylems are the passageway for water to ascend, sieve tubes are the passageway for nutrients to descend. In grapes and other plants, callus is deposited on both sides of the sieve plate in the fall, closing off the passageway for nutrients, but it reopens the following spring.
