Onoe Shibafune - Onoe Saishu

Japanese:
Onoe Shibafune - Onoe Saishu

Poet, Japanese literature scholar, calligrapher. His real name was Hachiro. Born on August 20, 1876 in Okayama Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. He taught at Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School and the Women's Gakushuin University. He participated in Ochiai Naofumi's Asaka-sha, but in his work "Sōkei Shi" (1902), which he co-edited with Kaneko Kunen, he advocated a style of scenic poetry that rivaled the style of poetry in the "Myojō" of the time. In 1905 (Meiji 38), he formed the "Shazensōsha" with Wakayama Bokusui and Maeda Yugure. After publishing the poetry magazine "Shazensō" (first published in 1911), he founded "Mizugame" in 1914 (Taisho 3). During this time, his critique "A Personal Theory on the Extinction of Tanka" ("Sosaku", October 1910) caused a stir. He moved from the romantic style of his poetry collection "Ginrin" (1904) to a more contemplative and straightforward style that emphasized everyday life and reality. In addition to many poetry collections such as "Silent Night," "Eternal Days," "From the Edge of a Diary," and "Clear River," he also wrote early poetry collections such as "Poetry of Heine" and "Golden Sail." He also wrote books on classical studies such as "Commentary on New Kokin Wakashu," waka studies, and calligraphy studies such as "Research on Heian Period Kusakana" (1923, for which he received a Doctor of Literature). As a calligrapher, he was known as a master of kana, and became a member of the Japan Art Academy. He died on January 13, 1957.
