An ancient Roman goddess. According to the myth told by Ovid, she was originally a nymph named Clane who hated men, but was captured by the god Janus and defiled. In return, Janus, the guardian of all entrances, gave her the role of protecting the entrance to homes from the intrusion of evil spirits. However, it is believed that she was originally a goddess who controlled the vitality of the human body, especially the internal organs.

古代ローマの女神。オウィディウスの伝える神話によれば，もとはクラネという名のニンフで，男嫌いだったが，あるときヤヌス神に捕えられて処女をけがされ，その代償にすべての入口の守護者であるこの神から，家の戸口を災いの侵入から守る役目を与えられたとされているが，元来は人間の肉体，ことに内臓の生命力を司る女神だったと思われる。
