...Even between clans related by marriage, those within the 10th degree of kinship are considered close relatives, and intermarriage is generally avoided. During the Yi Dynasty, intermarriage (marriage in a higher position or a lower position) between people of different social classes, such as yangban, jungin, commoners, and komin, was generally avoided, and even among yangban, spouses were sought according to the social status and influence of the families. Intermarriage was also avoided between opposing political factions.
