In Japan it is called "Annan ware" or "Annan ceramics." Of all Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam was the country most heavily influenced by Chinese ceramics, and ceramic production was also very active in Vietnam. Pottery dating to around the time of Christ, discovered in Thanh Hoa, south of Hanoi, was the first in Vietnam to be glazed and fired. The ash-glazed pottery, such as vases, racks, and high-rises, closely resembles bronzeware from the Han dynasty in China, and many of the pieces are difficult to determine whether they were made in China or Vietnam. The development of Vietnamese ceramics from the 3rd to 10th centuries is unclear. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
