A small shrub of the Thymelaeaceae family that blooms in early spring in moist, suitable areas within forests in warm regions (illustration). It is also called natsubouzu (summer bud) because it loses its leaves for about one month in midsummer. It grows in clumps at a height of about 1m. The leaves are gathered at the ends of the branches, alternate, oblong lanceolate, tapering gradually at the base, 5-10cm long, and of thin texture. From the end of August to September, several bunches of purple-yellowish green flower buds appear along with new leaves from the ends of the branches. The flowers that bloom the following spring have a 6-8mm long calyx tube with four lobes at the tip, two rows of eight stamens inside the tube, and a shallow cup-shaped disk surrounding the base of the pistil.
