A former town in Nishikubiki County, southwest of Niigata Prefecture. The main settlement facing the Sea of Japan developed as a post town on the Hokuriku Kaido, and is served by the Hokuriku Main Line and Hokuriku Expressway. In recent years, the number of commuters to Joetsu City and other areas has increased. In addition to rice cultivation, sea bream and shrimp are landed here. The town is known as the "Nadate landslide" which was caused by a major earthquake in 1751. In January 2005, it was incorporated into Joetsu City along with Yasuzuka Town, Urakawara Village, Oshima Village, and Maki Village in Higashikubiki County, and Kakizaki Town, Ogata Town, Yoshikawa Town, Itakura Town, Kiyosato Village, Kubiki Village, Nakago Village, and Miwa Village in Nakakubiki County. 65.93 km2 . 3,370 people (2003). 新潟県南西部,西頸城(にしくびき)郡の旧町。日本海に臨む主集落は北陸街道の宿場町として発達,北陸本線,北陸自動車道が通じる。近年,上越市などへの通勤者が増加。米作のほか,タイ,エビの水揚がある。1751年の大地震によって生じた〈名立崩(くずれ)〉がある。2005年1月東頸城郡安塚町,浦川原村,大島村,牧村,中頸城郡柿崎町,大潟町,吉川町,板倉町,清里村,頸城村,中郷村,三和村と上越市へ編入。65.93km2。3370人(2003)。
