A marine fish of the family Bocconidae in the order Saddlefish (illustration). It is called Okigisu in Iwate and Miyagi, Gisu in Tokyo, and Dabogisu in Misaki (Kanagawa) and Ibaraki. Its pelvic fins are located posteriorly, making it similar to a sardine. The base of the dorsal fin is long and covers almost the entire back. Its back is bright blue, and its abdomen is grayish. Its scales are round and easily peeled off, and its lateral line is well developed. Its snout protrudes long and opens downwards. It is a somewhat polar fish, and lives at depths of over 200 meters. It is found along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to off the coast of Tosa, and is caught in large quantities in Sendai, Misaki, and other areas. カライワシ目ソトイワシ科の海産魚(イラスト)。岩手・宮城でオキギス,東京でギス,三崎(神奈川)・茨城でダボギスと呼ばれる。腹びれが後位にあり,イワシ類に近い魚である。背びれの基底長が長く,背部のほぼ全面を占める。背面は鮮やかな青色,腹部は灰色を帯びている。うろこは円鱗ではがれやすく,側線がよく発達している。口先が長く突出し,口は下面に開く。やや寒帯性の魚で,しかも200m以上の深海に生息する。北海道から土佐沖までの太平洋岸に分布し,仙台,三崎などで大量に漁獲される。
