A British mountaineer active during the golden age of Alpine mountaineering. Born in London, he became an illustrator. He went to the Alps for work in 1860, and, fascinated by the beauty of the mountains, began mountaineering. He was the first to summit the Grandes Jorasses and the Aiguille Belt. In 1865, after eight attempt climbs, he was the first to summit the Matterhorn, which was said to be impregnable, but on the way back, four of the seven members fell to their deaths when their rope broke. Whymper, the leader of the expedition, had to endure public criticism and a trial, even though he was found not guilty. He made expeditions to Greenland in 1867 and 1872. In 1880, he was the first to summit Chimborazo in the Andes. In 1901, he made an expedition to the Canadian Rockies, and was the first to summit several peaks there. He made further expeditions to the Rockies in 1903, 1904, and 1910. He joined the Alpine Club in 1861, and was its vice-president from 1872 to 1874. He died in Chamonix, France in 1911. His books include "A Record of Climbing the Alps" (1871) and "A Journey through the Equatorial Andes" (1981-1982). He also invented the Whymper tent.
