The capital of the state of Western Australia. It is located in the southwest of the state, with the city centre on the right bank of the Swan River, and the city spreads to the left bank and Fremantle Port at the mouth of the river, bordering the Kwinana industrial area. It accounts for more than half of the population of Western Australia. It was founded in 1829 by British Admiral James Stirling, and became a city in 1856. It developed rapidly with the discovery of gold in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie-Boulder in the 1890s, the opening of Fremantle Port in 1901, the opening of the transcontinental railway in 1917, and mining development after World War II. It is the political, economic, and cultural centre of the state, and is home to the state parliament, government offices, churches, a meteorological observatory (1896), museums, art galleries, and the University of Western Australia (1911).
