First World

(?-1878) He made his debut in 1828 (Bunsei 11). After training as a performer of Takemoto Osumidayu and Takemoto Semitayu, he went down to Edo in 1846 (Koka 3). He returned to Osaka in 1873 (Meiji 6) and performed as the first Toyotake Kotsubodayu, retiring in 1876. The second (1838-1901) also went to Tokyo in 1881 (Meiji 14), and was highly regarded as a master in Kakigaracho.

III

(1868-1922) was born in Shizuoka City. He moved to Osaka in 1884 (Meiji 17) and succeeded Seiroku in 1903 (Meiji 36). He was hailed as the greatest of his generation, and played the works of Takemoto Osumidayu III and Toyotake Kotodayu II (later known as Yamashiro Shojo).

IV

(1889-1960) His real name was Sato Masaya. He was born in Tokyo. He was adopted into the first Seiroku family and took the name of the 4th generation in 1923 (Taisho 12). As the supporting shamisen of the second Kotodayu, he was known as a famous pair for 26 years until 1949 (Showa 24). He retired from the Bunraku troupe for a time, but after returning he was designated a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1980. With his elegant style of performance, he was a master representing the Showa period.

初世

(?―1878)1828年(文政11)初舞台。竹本大隅太夫(おおすみだゆう)や竹本勢見太夫(せみたゆう)を弾いて研鑽(けんさん)を積んだのち、46年(弘化3)に江戸へ下った。73年(明治6)に大阪へ戻って初世豊竹古靭太夫(とよたけこうつぼだゆう)を弾き、76年に引退。2世(1838―1901)も1881年(明治14)に東京へ行き、蠣殻町(かきがらちょう)の師匠として重んじられた。

3世

(1868―1922)静岡市の生まれ。1884年(明治17)に大阪へ出て、1903年(明治36)に清六を継ぐ。一世の名手と喧伝(けんでん)され、3世竹本大隅太夫や2世豊竹古靭太夫(後の山城少掾(やましろのしょうじょう))を弾いた。

4世

(1889―1960)本名佐藤正哉。東京生まれ。初世清六家の養子となり、1923年(大正12)に4世を襲名する。2世古靭太夫の相三味線として、49年(昭和24)に至るまでの26年間、名コンビをうたわれた。一時文楽(ぶんらく)座を退いたが、復帰後の55年には重要無形文化財保持者に認定された。格調の高い芸風で、昭和期を代表する名人であった。
