Yang Shoujing

A scholar from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China. His pen name was Seigo. He called himself Linsu Lao. He was from Hubei Province. He was from a merchant family and took the imperial examinations many times but failed. After giving up hope of becoming a government official, he devoted himself to his studies. He was well versed in historical geography, epigraphy, cataloging, calligraphy, and other subjects, and he has written many books. In historical geography, he devoted himself to the study of the Shui Jing Chu (Shui Jing Zhu Xu), and his lifetime work, the Shui Jing Zhu Xu ...

In the study of calligraphy, he completely revamped traditional calligraphy based on epigraphy (mainly the study of epigraphy). As a calligrapher, he had a great influence on the calligraphy world in Japan in the early Meiji period.

中国の清(しん)末から中華民国の初めにかけての学者。字(あざな)は惺吾(せいご)。隣蘇(りんそ)老人と号した。湖北省の人。商家の出身で、何度も科挙(かきょ)の試験を受けたが失敗し、仕官の望みを捨てて学問に没頭した。歴史地理、金石、目録、書学などに精通し著書はきわめて多い。歴史地理では『水経注(すいけいちゅう)』の研究に打ち込み、一生の業績である『水経注疏(そ)』は、その死後、門弟の熊会貞(ゆうかいてい)（1859―1936）によって完成された。目録学は、1880年（明治13）清国公使館員として来日したとき、中国の古書が日本に伝存するのに刺激されて研究したもので『日本訪書志』の著がある。

　書道の学では金石学（主として碑刻文字の研究）に基礎を置いて旧来の書学を一新した。書家としては明治初年の日本の書道界に大きな影響を残している。
