Al-Hudaydah

Al-Hudaydah
Also called Hodeidah. A major port in western Yemen, facing the Red Sea, located on the Tihama coastal plain. It has been recorded since the 15th century, but became important after the Tihama region was occupied by the Ottoman Empire in the 1520s. It belonged to Turkey until 1918, but was ceded to the emir of the Asir region by the British after World War I. It was returned to Yemen in 1925. In 1934, a rebellion provoked by Yemen broke out in the Asir region, and the Saudi Arabian army occupied Hodeidah. In the same year, it was returned to Yemen under the condition that Saudi Arabia's sovereignty over the Asir region was recognized by a treaty. In 1961, modern port facilities capable of berthing several ships of 10,000 tons were completed a few kilometers north of the port with the assistance of the Soviet Union, and a highway was constructed by China and other countries, completely revitalizing the city's economy. The main exports from the port are high-quality Yemeni coffee, cotton, leather, furs, and khat (a light narcotic drug). There is a small cotton ginning factory. Population: 155,110 (1986).
