Along with Ficino, he was one of the leading Platonists of Renaissance Italy. Born as the youngest son of the lord of Mirandola Castle, he studied at the universities of Bologna and Padua, but was drawn to Ficino and became interested in philosophy. He also mastered Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Arabic, and was praised for his genius for erudition. He resonated with Ficino's "eternal philosophy" and advocated a "philosophical peace" that attempted to reconcile the conflicts of the real world through the awareness of the identity that exists beneath it all.

フィチーノと並ぶルネサンス･イタリアの代表的プラトン主義思想家。ミランドラ城主の末子として生まれ，ボローニャ，パドバ両大学で学んだが，フィチーノにひかれて哲学に関心を注ぎ，一方，ギリシア語，ヘブライ語からアラム語，アラビア語まで修得して天才的博識をうたわれた。フィチーノの〈永遠の哲学〉に共鳴し，現実世界の対立を，その底を貫いて存在する同一性の自覚によって融和させようと試みる〈哲学的平和〉を主唱した。
